My research question: “How does the size and economic quality and status of Native American Reservations affect Indian culture today? And how is this factor currently diminishing the relationship between the U.S. government and the Native American peoples and their tribes?
The reason that I chose this topic was because Native American culture has always fascinated me. My grandfather lives in Arizona next to a Native American reserve, and I have personally witnessed the subpar economic conditions of these areas. A lot of these reserves are highly impoverished, and provide little opportunity for the sustaining of tribal culture given their economic disadvantages. High rates of unemployment, suicide, and alcoholism have also severely impacted the American Indian people and my goal of this essay is to elaborate on why exactly that this is happening. I want my audience to be able to recognize how these reservations were immorally established and how Native American culture today is on the brink of extinction due to extreme poverty and the given disadvantages the U.S. government has brought to these people.
